Bottle Feeding & Bottle Refusal Support
Did you know that lactation consultants can help with bottle feeding, too? As infant feeding specialists, we support families with all aspects of feeding, including bottle feeding breast milk or formula.
Whether you're preparing to return to work, introducing a bottle for the first time, or struggling with feeding challenges, we can help.
Many families are surprised when their breastfed baby refuses a bottle. Others find that their baby will take a bottle but doesn't seem to feed efficiently or comfortably. These challenges can be stressful, but you don't have to figure it out alone.
Common bottle feeding concerns include:
Refusing a bottle
Difficulty transitioning to a bottle before returning to work
Milk leaking from the corners of the mouth during feeds
Clicking sounds while feeding
Excessive air intake leading to gas, fussiness, or reflux symptoms
Taking a very long time to finish a bottle
Finishing bottles extremely quickly
Breast refusal (baby will only take a bottle)
Collapsing the bottle nipple during feeds
Frequent coughing, choking, or gulping while bottle feeding
Concerns about bottle flow rate or nipple shape
During your visit, I will observe your baby feeding, complete a comprehensive oral-functional assessment, and evaluate feeding skills to identify any challenges that may be impacting bottle feeding.
Together, we'll create a personalized feeding plan and provide practical strategies to help your baby feed more comfortably and efficiently. When appropriate, I also have a variety of bottle brands, nipple shapes, and flow rates available to trial during your consultation to help determine what works best for your baby.
